Happy tails at catch-up

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

ONE is a lovable thief. Another is a gumby. Most like toilet paper, socks, sardines and garden hoses.

The first litter of greyhound puppies ever taken into the Animal Welfare League of Queensland to be rehomed have had a reunion, four months after finding new families.

“They are a bit cheeky, doing normal, cheeky puppy stuff,” said playdate organiser Sue Spencer, an Animal Welfare League volunteer.

“They’re living the true pet life without any restraints. It’s really nice.

“They get to live puppyhood naturally.”

Eight of the nine racingbred dogs, now six months old, were at the reunion. They found new homes at 10 weeks of age.

Most greyhounds are bred for racing and pups are kept until they are able to be broken in. This makes greyhound pups rare. It is understood the puppies came from an unregistered mating and so cannot be raced.

Owner Max Burndred said her fawn-brindle greyhound pup Aura weighed 15kg and lived with cats.

“She tries to play with them. She plays and barks at them,” she said.

Ms Burndred said she had trained Aura like any other pup.

She is crate trained, not allowed on the couch (except on someone’s lap) and knows how to sit, she said.

Ms Burndred said she adopted Aura after wanting a greyhound for more than a decade.

THE SIBLINGS

STYX: “She’s a thief, she loves to steal shoes and run around with them. She doesn’t chew them (though). She also brings her bowl and puts it on the couch.” – Chloe Ivak

“He came in with the broken leg ... we got him later than everyone else. He’s a dude. He was a surprise. When (my partner) got him, I came back from work and he was running around the kitchen.” – Chris Green

“She’s just so placid, really well behaved. She’s already nearly toilet trained. She gets on with our cats and dogs and is quite confident. She collects things.” – Isaac Munsie and Ambyr Cousen

“The hose, she loves water. She always tries to bite it. She’s taught me how to tidy up because otherwise she’ll get into everything.” - Judy Robertson

“Aura is a cheeky, wee girl who likes to back chat. She has truly settled into our home, and is comfortable around the snakes and respectful – most of the time – with the cats.”

“We’re used to older greyhounds, so she’s crazy. But she’s brought out (Mr Jones, our other greyhound’s) playful side. She loves socks and sardines.” – Jess Markey and Jess Redmond

“In one word, gumby. He’s still just getting used to his size. He’s mellowing out nicely but is a bit mischievous.” - Liesa Brennan

“He’s just the snuggliest guy, but he has a thing for toilet paper and things. He’s like a bower bird.” – Lisa Franzen

“The fact she knows she’s boss of us. Nowhere’s good enough for her except for our bed.” – Brett Harron
