RUN AND GUNS

Hello Queensland, we’re The Fox and The Jet ... and we’re here to destroy you

- DEAN RITCHIE

THEY were the two indigenous kids wearing the same colours and sharing the same dream.

Now The Fox and The Jet will hope to crush Queensland’s hopes and claim their State of Origin riches.

After learning their trade with famous La Perouse United in the South Sydney Junior League, Josh Addo-Carr and James Roberts are reunited, this time in sky blue.

Roberts and Addo-Carr are part of NSW coach Brad Fittler’s grand plan.

The pair speak proudly of their time at La Perouse wearing black and white jumpers.

“It’s outstanding for La Perouse,” Addo-Carr said. “It’s crazy, man. It’s great that two indigenous kids from La Perouse – who played for La Perouse Panthers – are now here.

“As everyone knows, La Perouse is an indigenous community and it’s good to represent all my junior clubs, my people, my family and, most importantly, my state.

“Jimmy and I were in different years at La Perouse. He is two or three years older than me. We didn’t play together but we went to school together at Matraville Sports High.

“I can’t wait to play with him on Wednesday night. He was a gun back in the day. He was The Jet, mate – no one could catch him back in those days. He deserves all the success he gets and he’s been playing outstanding footy this year – that’s why he’s in this side.”

Roberts remembers going through the grades at La Perouse on his way to an NRL debut with South Sydney.

“I played for La Perouse between under-13s to under-17s,” he said. “I love and cherish the La Perouse club. I made some lifelong friends there. There has been some really good people come out of there – Adam Reynolds and Nathan Peats. I think Tim Lafai even had a couple of years there.

“Josh was in the younger years when I was there. Him and ‘AJ’ – Alex Johnston (Souths fullback). They used to carve it up in their years. It’s a great club, I really cherish it.”

The pair are among an impressive list of players to have emerged from La Perouse. They include Keith Holman, Eric Simms, Kevin Longbottom, Bruce “La Pa” Stewart, Paul Sait, George Longbottom, Sean Garlick, Tim Lafai, Graham Lyons, Ross Harrington, Bruce Longbottom, Reni Maitua, Beau Champion, Adam Reynolds, Corey Stewart, Nathan Peats, Alex Johnston, Russell Fairfax, Tyrone Phillips, Dylan Farrell, Nathan Gibbs and Gavin Lester.
