M1 fatality: Car going wrong way

- PEYTON HUTCHINS

A WOMAN is dead after a head-on collision on the Gold Coast’s Pacific Motorway, allegedly involving a vehicle travelling in the wrong direction.

It’s understood a 32-yearold man was driving the wrong way down the M1 on Saturday morning, when he collided with a southbound car at Pimpama. The smash seriously injured the other car’s driver and a 32-year-old female passenger in the rear seat died.

An off-duty paramedic desperately tried to save the woman’s life, but she died at the crash scene.

The drivers of both cars were taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital.

Yesterday morning a 61year-old man died in similar circumstances when his car collided head-on with a ute in an incident which also allegedly involved a vehicle being driven in the wrong direction down the Gateway Motorway at Rochedale.

Acting Inspector Alicia Coyne said the two crashes were shocking, with both appearing to be driver error.

“We’ve had two tragic circumstances in the last 24 hours,” Insp Coyne said.

“There wouldn’t have been much (the victims) could do.

“It would have been on top of them (very quickly) and you certainly wouldn’t be expecting a car to come from the other direction.

“The amount of damage would indicate he was travelling at a high speed; not necessarily over the speed limit, but it is 100km on that part.”
