Rollers need to lift bar

- EMMA GREENWOOD emma.greenwood@news.com.au

THE Rollers are searching for positives after their second consecutive QBL drubbing, this time 94-64 to Townsville.

Coach Mick Conlon was scathing after his side’s 24point home loss to Logan a fortnight ago, taking to social media to apologise to fans who paid to watch what he termed a substandard performance.

And he and his players were disappointed again last night.

“I just feel that it’s our duty to put the best possible product on the floor and keep people turning up,” Conlon said.

“We’ve had sensational crowds to start with and I feel like we’ve let people down if we don’t play to our potential.

“A hell of a lot of people put in a hell of a lot of work behind the scenes to get that many people to the games and we need to repay the favour by doing our best job on the court.

“It’s disappointing when it doesn’t come off.

“Townsville’s a hell of a team and I thought we were a chance but we weren’t in the same ballpark.”

The Rollers faced challenges before tip-off, with import Akeem Marsh ruled out with back spasms, while Christian Salecich finished with a hamstring strain.

Searching for some positives, Conlon said it was good to see players that were often on the bench come into the game and work hard.

“There were a couple of guys that really busted their butts and tried really hard,” he said. “It was good to see some guys that have been buried on the bench get an opportunity.

“We need to go back and have a look at where we’re at, have a look at what we need to work on and just get back to work. “There’s not a lot else to do. We don’t get a do-over, we don’t get a new shopping list of talent – we go back to work.

“There’s no magic pill, it’s just hard work, so we’ll get back into it at training this week and work out butts off.”

The Rollers women also had a tough afternoon, losing 97-67 to the unbeaten Flames.

News was better for the North Gold Coast Seahawks though, with their women beating Logan Thunder 89-83 to climb to sixth place on the QBL ladder.
