SAM’S VR FEAT OUT OF THIS WORLD

- KATE PARASKEVOS

LOCAL tech guru Sam Hussey has been instrumental in creating a brand new technology sector that did not exist a mere two years ago.

The former Runaway Bay local is leading the field in augmented reality, virtual reality and new technology.

Now based in Bowen Hills, the 31-year-old has worked with brands such as DreamWorks, NBC-Universal, Brisbane Heat, Brisbane Festival, Westfield, TAFE, Ekka, Adidas, and MasterCard to deliver virtual reality experiences with his company Lightweave.

“Our technology is used by clients who want to deliver an experience to their user, through augmented reality or allowing someone to put on a virtual reality headset and be apart of an immersive experience,” he said.

”We delivered Brisbane Heat fans the opportunity to become the (cricket) player.

“The fan was given a cricket bat and when inside the VR experience, they were able to face an over while standing at the crease at the Gabba.”

After working more than 16 years in advertising and entertainment, My Hussey started his company in 2006 and has since been nominated for Business News Australia Young Entrepreneur of the Year and was part of the ‘Top 40 under 40’ entrepreneurs.

“We understood that immersive technology was a phenomenal way for a brand to provide a lifelike experience for their audience and really create something meaningful and compelling,” he said.

“The company was formed at an early stage when virtual reality was coming back into the market and we were provided early access to the headsets in early 2015 from two of the major manufacturers.

“This allowed us to get a real insight into the hardware.

“There is just something special about working on technology that you know hasn’t been seen in the market before and that is driven by a pretty big passion for just making experiences that would never have been seen before by a user.

“I think that is pretty special and it’s definitely a driver for me with the technology we create.

“I have been working professionally shooting video content since I was 15 years old and I had to do a lot of work to really get my skills up.”

Mr Hussey worked selling ice-creams to pay for courses in radio, screenwriting, producing and directing from when he was only 10 years old.
