Horn fight only draws a win from local fans

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

JEFF Horn lost no respect in the eyes of the Gold Coast boxing community during his loss to Terence Crawford yesterday, according to Damien O’Mara of the Nerang PCYC.

O’Mara said Horn had carried himself well and still has plenty to offer in the ring.

“Crawford is probably pound for pound the best fighter in the world at the moment,” he said.

“It was a big ask and I think Jeff has done really well. There was people complaining about the stoppage but Jeff has got a family and a wife and a kid so I think the stoppage was a good thing. No one needs to see him being hurt seriously.

“And there’s still life in his legs, there is still fights for him locally and internationally.

“Losing to Terence Crawford is no shame.”

O’Mara floated the possibility of Horn moving up a weight division and in any case believes the Brisbane boxer always positions himself to maximise his talent.

“He is a good kid, he looks after himself really well,” O’Mara said.

“He is a real clean living sort of guy.

“The training takes a toll on your body but Jeff knows how to look after himself very well and he is very professional in how he does it so that’s a plus and he will be able to stay in it for a little while longer.

“But hopefully he gets a few more fights and then gets out, retires with a bit of cash. He didn’t lose any respect from me – he didn’t give up, he didn’t back down.

“He’s a real tough cookie and it’s not the end of the road.”
