SCOTLAND’S Alex Marshall has hit the green running as an early favourite in the Australian Open singles.

The Open began on Saturday with the men’s singles sectional round kicking off competition.

Regarded as one of the best players in the world, Marshall showed his skill at Broadbeach to qualify for the round of 256 to be held on Saturday.

Event manager Mark Casey said he wasn’t surprised by the result as competition got off to a smooth start across the venues on the Gold Coast.

“There hasn’t been any major upsets at this stage,” he said.

Casey said he is happy with how the competition, regarded as one of the best in the world, is going.

“So far the event is running smoothly,” he said.

Stationed at Broadbeach, Casey said the crowds have been up with about 200-300 spectators per day.

“With the weather being nice, we’ve had good crowds today (Sunday),” he said.

The remaining games of the sectional round of the men’s singles will be played today, with results of players advancing confirmed tonight.

The women’s singles sectional round begins today and will be held over the next three days.
