Probe over war crimes

HAVING a separate chain of command for the Special Air Services Regiment operating in Afghanista­n was in retrospect “possibly a mistake”, the Australian Defence Associatio­n told an inquiry.

There are allegation­s, raised in a defence inquiry report, that soldiers in the elite group may have committed war crimes in Afghanista­n.

ADA spokesman Neil James says for the first time at war, the SAS in Afghanista­n did not fall under the command of the local Australian force commander.
