Rollers season a worry

- EMMA GREENWOOD emma.greenwood@news.com.au

A STARRING role from NBL veteran Rhys Martin has not been enough to get the Gold Coast Rollers’ Queensland Basketball League campaign back on track.

Martin finished with 13 points and six assists in the Rollers’ 99-85 loss to the Thunder at Logan last night.

While Gold Coast had Jack McVeigh back from an ankle injury to contribute a teamhigh 14 points, they could not overcome the Thunder and slumped to their fourth consecutive loss.

Mick Conlon’s men have now lost five of their past six games, with their only win in that period a one-point victory over the Sunshine Coast.

But with half their games remaining, the Rollers remain confident they can still push into the top eight to be a playoff force.

News was little better for the Rollers women, who lost 107-86 to the Thunder yesterday, unable to repeat last week’s breakthrough victory.

Captain Siarn Woods was outstanding for the Rollers, finishing with 21 points and three steals.

North Gold Coast were on the end of a lesson from the Mackay Meteorettes, losing a game that could be crucial to their playoff chances 71-51.

No Seahawks player made double figures in a clash the Meteorettes dominated on their home floor.

Aimee Durbidge was the Seahawks’ best, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes off the bench. QBL MEN ROUND 8

Shooting at a dismal 26 per cent from the floor, the Seahawks were unable to keep pace with the Meteorettes, who at one point went on a 13-0 scoring run to put the game beyond the Gold Coasters’ reach.

The Seahawks men continue to struggle in their first season in the QBL, losing 110-79 to Mackay to remain at the bottom of the ladder.
