SEAHAWKS’ MARCH CLAIMS GULLS

- CONNOR O’BRIEN connor.obrien@news.com.au

TUGUN have landed their biggest scalp of the Rugby League Gold Coast season and backed that up with two key mid-season signings.

The Seahawks retained fourth place by edging Tweed Heads in a 17-16 thriller yesterday, with talented halfback Zac Walsh booting the decisive field goal.

Tugun skipper Nick Harrold hailed the win “a big turning point for our club this year”, especially given the circumstances that saw them play much of the second half with no one on the bench.

“They were out on their feet but they managed to get over the line somehow,” coach Clint Barends said of his players.

Among the injuries were big names Ash Harrison (ribs) – after a standout effort – prop Shane Gillham (knee) and Rob Apanui (ribs), who was forced to hospital.

With none expected back next week, the signings of Anthony Gray and Nathanael Barnes could not have come at a better time.

Gray is a forward who has switched from Burleigh while 35-year-old winger Barnes is the all-time leading try-scorer for Tweed Heads at Intrust Super Cup level with 108 tries from 142 games.

In Saturday games, Southport pipped Bilambil 38-36, Runaway Bay got the better of Burleigh 26-22 and Currumbin fended off a defiant Ormeau 32-8, after the Shearers had trailed by just 8-4 at halftime.
