Raids target bikies

Cross-border operation aims to disrupt gangs

- CAMPBELL GELLIE

FOUR outlaw motorcycle gangs have been disrupted in an operation by Queensland and New South Wales police.

More than 10 properties were raided, one alleged bikie charged and three more people arrested during yesterday’s raids.

Tweed and Byron Police District Detective Chief Inspector Brendan Cullen said the cross-border operation included raids in Cudgen, Banora Point, Tugun and a workplace at Carrara.

“What we have sought to achieve today is to disrupt and diminish the criminal networks these outlaw motorcycle gangs hold in this area,” he said. “The people we have targeted are from various clubs including the Lone Wolf Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, Nomads Outlaw Motorcycle Gang, Mongols and also the Bandidos.”

Police will allege the 47year-old man arrested at Carrara was a Lone Wolf member involved in an incident while visiting Long Bay Jail in Sydney in 2014.

He will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court today after being extradited to NSW yesterday.

Det Chief Insp Cullen said another 27-year-old man will be charged following a raid at Cudgen.

“We executed a number of firearms prohibition orders at Cudgen where we located steroids, prescription medication, ammunition and small explosives,” he said.

Police carried out a search warrant at a home in Tugun where they found prescription medication and steroids.

Det Chief Insp Cullen said legal proceedings would soon start in relation to a man at the property when the police arrived.

“We have also done a number of bail compliance and probation compliance checks on members of outlaw motorcycle gangs,” he said.

“One Lone Wolf associate and another Nomad associate failed drug and alcohol tests.”
