SHORT BUT SWEET FOR WINTER ‘SNAPPERS’

- BRITT RAMSEY

THE Gold Coast is known for its sun, but we’ll be seeing a lot less of it today.

Locals will get just nine hours and 53 minutes of sunlight as we go through the winter solstice – the shortest day of the year.

Photographer Akiko Howell said winter was the best time to snap photos.

“The air is very clear, and cold – so the colours change and are more vivid during winter,” she said. “It is hard to get up of a morning because of the cold, but it’s worth it.

“I love getting up to see the colours of the sky changing across the Gold Coast, it’s the most fun part.”

Weatherzone meteorologist Kim Westcott said the passing of the solstice doesn’t immediately mean things will warm up.

“We’ll see temperatures a bit colder than June averages in the mornings,” she said.

“The long-term average is about 13 degrees. And it will be a touch warmer than average during the days at 21.4.

“We’ll see mostly sunny skies, but it could be a little breezier than normal.”
