THE Gold Coast United women’s NPL Queensland team has lifted the club’s first silverware following a dominant 5-1 win over league rivals Mudgeeraba.

United won the Faye Rodd Cup, a trophy honouring the memory of Mrs Rodd who dedicated her life to women’s football, on Sunday at Sid Bigg Park.

“I am proud of the players for winning the club’s first trophy, it’s a credit to such a young

team,” coach Michael

Cook said.

“We weren’t at our best, but every player worked hard and that is what got the result in the end.

“If you can be below your best and still win, it shows great character.”

New recruit Reiri Ono and Mackenzie Akins put Gold Coast 2-0 up going into halftime and they added one more each, along with another from Phoebe Cave, in the second half as Mudgeeraba managed just one in reply.

“It was great to see our new signing (Ono) scoring and fitting into the team right away,” Cook said.

“The immediate future of the team and her place in it is very exciting.”

United, who hold seventh on the ladder, can extend their winning streak when they welcome Brisbane Roar to Robina next Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Gold Coast United men’s NPL Qld side drew with competition leaders Olympic FC 2-2 on Sunday at Goodwin Park in Brisbane.

Brandon Reeves gave

Gold Coast a 1-0 lead but United soon trailed 2-1 following two goals from Olympic’s Jez Lofthouse.

Reeves equalised early in the second half.

“This was a fantastic team performance against a very experienced side,” coach Sean lane said. “After the last three poor results the draw stops the bleeding and now we can push on from here.”

United will play North Qld United this Saturday at home.
