Cate claims Pan Pac trials win with ‘2020 vision’

- REECE HOMFRAY

AUSSIE sprint star Cate Campbell’s Tokyo Olympic plans are on track with the freestyle star declaring she has “2020 vision” after winning the women’s 100m freestyle at the Pan Pac trials in Adelaide last night.

With sister and Commonwealth Games conqueror Bronte on a break from the sport, Campbell swam 52.61secs to win from Emma McKeon (53.25) and training partner Shayna Jack (54.20).

Emily Seebohm was a late withdrawal from the final and for the rest of the meet due to a health issue which her coach David Lush said would see her return to Brisbane today.

But Campbell breezed through the final and was well under the qualifying time for the Pan Pacs in August which will also be held in Tokyo.

“One of my big drawcards for Pan Pacs is the fact that we get to check out Tokyo,” Campbell said.

“I’ve got my sights set on that, I’ve got 2020 vision and Pan Pacs will be just across the road from the new stadium they’re building.

“That was a really good swim, I didn’t know what to expect coming into it.

“It was two weeks out of the water (after Comm Games) but it’s been really good, we’ve made progress and tried to shake training up which has been good fun.”

In other races last night, Jack Cartwright rediscovered his motivation for the pool to win the men’s 100m freestyle.

Cartwright’s preparation for the Commonwealth Games was hampered by a racing heart but he still made the final on the Gold Coast and finished sixth.

The 19-year-old admitted he struggled to get back in the pool after the Games but a two-week training camp in Thailand helped him find his mojo as he won in 48.33secs.

Kaylee McKeown won the women’s 100m backstroke in 59.62 which was a qualifying time for Pan Pacs, while David Morgan won the men’s 200m butterfly in 1:56.98 and Mitch Larkin won the men’s 100m backstroke in 53.66.
