Kyrgios: ‘Great to see Bernie is back’

- RYAN KEEN

AUSTRALIAN tennis star Nick Kyrgios says it’s great to see a resurgent Bernard Tomic enjoying himself on court again after the Gold Coaster’s troubled 2017.

The pair are through to Wimbledon’s second round and will face off in round three if they win their next matches tonight.

Asked about Tomic’s re- cent string of wins after a disastrous slump from 17 to outside the top 250, Kyrgios said Tomic seemed to be having fun again.

Tomic, ranked at 184 and expected to climb, breezed through his first round on his favoured grass beating 122-ranked Hubert Hurkacz 6-4 6-2 7-6.

It was a contrast to last year’s first round exit and admission he was “bored”.

“I got a sense with Bernie today he was just having fun. Last year, seeing him go down the way he did, it wasn’t good for anyone,” Kyrgios said after his own tough 7-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 win against Denis Istomin.

“(Bernie) was a guy struggling with a lot of things and today was a massive improvement. It is good to see.”

Kyrgios said if Tomic put his mind to it he could “do some damage here.”

“On the grass, he is a nightmare, he plays very well ... when I watch him play now there is a bit of a weight off his shoulders.”

Tomic faces Japan star Kei Nishikori and Kyrgios plays Dutch veteran Robin Haase.
