Woman strangled, court told

A WOMAN who was allegedly choked by her father-inlaw will be forced to give a second statement to clarify if she was strangled or just assaulted.

The Southport Magistrate­s Court her police were called to a family gathering in February this year after reports a woman had been choked by her fatherin-law.

The man, who cannot be named, faces charges of choking and suffocatio­n and assault occasionin­g bodily harm.

During the fight with the woman, the man allegedly wrapped his hands around her neck leaving her feeling dizzy and light headed.

“You can’t put your kids through this life you are living,” the court was told the man said.

Defence barrister Martin Longhurst, instructed by Campbell MacCallum of Moloney MacCallum Abdelshahi­ed Lawyers, said it was unclear from the statement if the woman’s airway was obstructed in the alleged attack.

Magistrate Pamela Dowse agreed the statement was “confusing” She ordered police get a second statement by July 25 to clarify what happened during the alleged incident.

The man can apply to have the woman cross-examined as part of the committal hearing process if the second statement is still not clear. The matter was adjourned to August 8.
