Courts full of drama
WELL, what a crazy week for basketball.
Starting off with the local derby for Gold Coast fans, with Seahawks taking the honours at home against Gold Coast in the QBL.
Then the craziness of the NBA with LeBron James taking his show to Tinseltown – LA and Boogie Cousins ringchasing with the Warriors.
Squeezed into the middle of this was the chaotic scenes as the Boomers and the Philippines did their best interpretation of the WWE.
Basketball is going crazy, methinks!
IN all my years of basketball, I’ve never seen such poor behaviour.
The pettiness leading up to the match, including the tripping and pushing in warmups. The call to arms by the Philippines coach – which resulted in a swarming mass of players, support staff and random officials attacking players at an international level – is unprecedented. Australia has its blame for what happened in the lead-up to the event but the reaction from the Philippines team, the posing after the event and general farcical finish to the game (3 on 5 won’t be seen for a while at that level) had jaws dropping all over the nation.
I still can’t believe someone didn’t get seriously hurt.
FIBA will drop the hammer on all involved and so they should.
The world championships are to be held in the Philippines next year and I’m pretty sure that NBA teams aren’t going to be very keen to let players go if they can’t be assured of security at the games. GOLD Coast under-14 girls swept all before them in winning the Queensland state championships this week.
They were undefeated throughout the season.
Putting on a masterclass, our girls didn’t have a team get within 20 points of them in a dominant display.
Now, the girls look towards the club nationals where they will be trying to be the first ever Gold Coast team to win a medal.
Hopes are high and credit must be given to coaches, Sarah and Anthony Petrie who have done a wonderful job to get this talented group of girls to play for each other.
