Henry not behind Tweed Heads’ loss

FUNDAMENTAL errors –not the inside knowledge of former Gold Coast coach Neil Henry – have been identified as the cause behind Tweed Heads’ 24-22 loss to Wynnum Manly.

Henry has taken on an advisory role with Wynnum and was on hand at North Stradbroke Island on Saturday to see the red-and-green side deal a bitter blow to Tweed’s Intrust Super Cup finals dreams.

Ben Woolf’s side defended soundly for a large chunk of the game but shot themselves in the foot too many times with handling errors.

“I think our response was better once we got behind this week than last week, but yeah, we still just seem to get ourselves in those positions that we shouldn’t get into,” assistant coach Matt King said.

“(Henry) probably knew a few of our boys’ strengths and weaknesses … but they played with a little bit more belief than us and a little bit more commitment and ran a little bit harder at certain times and I think that’s what gave them the edge more so than any inside knowledge.”

One of Henry’s former Titans players Ryan Simpkins, who was elevated into a share of the Tweed captaincy alongside Lamar Liolevave to give him the power to deal with referees, admitted they only had themselves to blame.

“In the second half we just made too many fundamental errors coming out of our own end and didn’t really give ourselves a chance to put any pressure on,” Simpkins said.

Though still striving for NRL game time, the 29-yearold workhorse said it was special to lead the Seagulls, who he has captained briefly in the past.

Tweed fielded three debutants in Nathan Young, Kalani Going and Reece Summer. Forward Tristan Lumley missed the game with a rib injury.
