‘Everyone should be doing their part’

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

CURRUMBIN Wildlife Sanctuary senior veterinarian Dr Michael Pyne says Gold Coast residents should take it upon themselves to protect native wildlife.

“My theory is everyone should be doing their part, it’s too easy to point the finger at councils and state governments and saying they should do more, the truth is people need to become more Dr Pyne said.

He said the Gold Coast should be proud to be one of the most biodiverse cities in Australia and could become a city that has learned to live with wildlife.

“The city is incredibly well positioned and we have some incredible wildlife and that opportunity is there to show people and wildlife can coexist,” he said. engaged,”

Dr Pyne said 90 per cent of native animals taken to the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital ended up there because of human interaction.

He said residents who wanted to improve conditions for native wildlife should keep pets like dogs and cats indoors overnight, plant native trees, pack away hooks and lines after fishing, avoid single use plastics and watch out for animals when driving.
