DIPLOMATIC DISCUSSION

- LEXIE BERNARD

THE United Nations has sat down at a meeting on the Gold Coast this week, with just one catch – they had to finish up in time for the school bus.

Bond University has hosted its annual High School Model UN (BUHMUN) Conference, with 62 students from across Australia given the chance to experience the life of an international diplomat.

Students adopted the personas of allocated countries, acting out UN proceedings under this year’s theme, ‘To End Poverty In All its Forms Everywhere’.

Proud member of Emmanuel College’s winning team Yasmin Lewis said the conference gave students a chance to network, build their confidence and develop teamwork skills.

“All of us have a love and passion for international relations, and I truly believe participating in BUHMUN has set me on a path for a career in this exciting arena,” she said.

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Julie Bishop delivered a special message for the students, letting them know how important their efforts were.

“It is inspiring to see so many young Australians take an active interest in the work of the UN and the mechanics of international diplomacy,” she said.
