Woolf remains top priority

TWEED Heads have made extending the contract of firstyear coach Ben Woolf their top priority for the 2019 Intrust Super Cup season.

Boosted by an influx of players through Woolf’s connections including as a former Titans under-20 coach, the Seagulls have defied wooden spoon predictions to still be in the finals race with six rounds remaining.

But like their rivals, they already have an eye on next year and coach retention is high on the agenda.

Woolf signed on a one-year deal for 2018 and talks are underway to extend his tenure – likely by another 12 months.

“That’s probably our biggest priority at the moment,” said Seagulls chief executive Paul Stephenson, when asked of their movements for 2019.

“The board want Woolfy to coach next year.

“As far as I am concerned, we couldn’t have a better coach for 2019.”

Derby rivals Burleigh have generally extended their longtime coach Jimmy Lenihan by two years at a time but the Bulletin understands that length of deal is not necessarily being sought at the Piggabeen negotiating table.

Woolf will go head-to-head with his brother Kristian, who coaches Townsville, when the two sides play in Hughenden on Sunday as part of the ISC’s Country Round.
