Composed Stellar powers to victory

STELLAR Power has always shown an ability to run away from his rivals but the gelding looks to have finally found the right time to do it.

Gold Coast jockey Luke Rolls rode the Bryan Daistrained four-year-old to victory in the Class 1 Plate (900m) at Aquis Park on Saturday in what was the second win of his nine-run career.

Stellar Power ($5) previously had a habit of attempting to charge away from the field when pressured early in races, leaving him nothing for the run home.

But the gelding showed his added composure at the Gold Coast, sitting with three other horses battling for the lead before blazing away to win by more than a length from $3 favourite Doom.

“He surprised me a little bit how quick he came home, so it was good,” Dais said.

“We tried to get him out further in his first preparation and he would lead in races. But horses would come and pressure him and he has tended to want to push harder.

“He was left found wanting at the finish. We have tried to drop him back in distances and try to teach him to sit off the speed a bit.

“He was able to relax on Saturday and even though he was out wide from barrier five he wasn’t trying to charge.

“He had something left for the finish.

“We actually planned to sit in behind the leader from his barrier and let the speed go but he got out pretty well and over 900m there is no going backwards from there. It’s about getting out and going.

“He is getting better and I think there might be a few more wins in him.”

Eagle Farm-based Dais said he would try to find another 900m or 1000m race during the next two to three weeks as he takes Stellar Power through his grades.
