NO RESCUING THE HOPES OF NORTHCLIFFE RIVALS
NORTHCLIFFE are the victors of the 2018 Queensland Pool Rescue Championships, with Currumbin and Maroochydore joining them on the podium.
Surf Lifesaving Queensland sports manager Stuart Hogben said there was some excellent racing across the two days at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre.
“We saw some stellar racing, but Northcliffe just proved too strong. They dominated not only in the individual events but also in the team relay events, across both the youth and senior fields,” he said.
A highlight from the weekend was that of Alexandra Headland’s Lani Pallister, whose time in the under-17 100m rescue medley was a mere 0.3 seconds off a world record.
Overall there were 540 competitors who raced throughout the competition, the biggest contingent in recent years.
“There is no doubt that this exceptional group of lifesavers have kept themselves in shape during the off-season,” Hogben said. “The pool side of competition has become a big part of the surf lifesaving program and competitive calendar, and this weekend we saw the increased level of technical skills and racing speed on display.”
Saturday featured the sport’s top junior competitors, aged under-11 through to 15, with yesterday featuring seniors from under-17 to opens and masters with a range of events, including manikin rescues and obstacle swims.
