Man beaten by gang with baseball bat

- LEA EMERY

A MAN who beat another man with a baseball bat in the Coomera Waters Tavern car park will remain behind bars until Christmas.

Trent Daniel Habershon pleaded guilty yesterday to one count of assault occasioning bodily harm for the brutal attack.

Judge Katherine McGinness sentenced Habershon to 18 months jail with parole release on December 23 this year.

The court heard Habershon and two others went to a Coomera man’s home and demanded to speak with him about 8pm on January 16, 2016.

When the man asked to speak with them away from his family, the group agreed to meet at the Coomera Waters Tavern car park.

“When the complainant arrived, he got out of the car and some of you attacked him,” Ms McGinness said.

“He was struck to the head and punched to the face before he ran for help.”

Ms McGinness said the victim was left with a cut to the lip and bruising to the body.

“The motive is unclear, however the actions were clearly done to at least cause him fear,” she said.

Habershon’s co-accused were last year sentenced to 18 months and two years respectively.

Ms McGuinness said in Habershon’s case there was an aggravating factor that he breached a suspended sentence when he took part in the bashing.
