Council considers highrise next to Northcliffe club Skinny fit for Surfers tower
A NSW developer wants to build a super-thin tower next to one of the Gold Coast’s most popular surf clubs.
The 15-metre wide, 31storey tower will neighbour Northcliffe Surf Life Saving Club at the intersection of Garfield Tce and Thornton St, overlooking the southern end of Surfers Paradise.
The skinniest tower on the Coast is a 45-storey, southern Surfers Paradise highrise at Wharf Rd, at 12 metres wide.
The Garfield Tce high-rise will have just 50 apartments and be home to 155 people.
The tower would be topped with a five-bedroom penthouse spread across the top three levels, including a rooftop terrace with pool.
City planning boss Councillor Cameron Caldwell said the project would continue the revitalisation in southern Surfers Paradise led by the $1 billion Jewel development.
“There are a lot of prestige boutique apartments in the area and this project is well located,” Cr Caldwell said.
“Council welcomes this project and we are seeing continued renewal of the precinct between central Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach.
“A thorough assessment will be undertaken.”
The tower will rise 104m above Surfers Paradise Beach and have a gym and infinity pool at the base of the podium overlooking the water.
PM No.1 filed the development application with council this week. The developer is based in NSW and its sole directors are Fan Yang and Dongmei Ye.
If approved, the high-rise will replace a three-storey building on the site.
The tower was designed by prominent southeast firm Blight Rayner, which worked on ASF’s $3 billion integrated resort proposal at The Spit and Sunland’s $200 million The Lanes shopping centre at Clear Island Waters.
The tower would feature 66 car parking spaces operated by an “automatic valet parking” system. Cars would drive into a lift accessible from Garfield Tce and the driver would exit before the car is taken to the lower level by a lift and parked via turntable and shuttles.
