Ageless stars tee up

- ALEXANDRA BERNARD

SOME of the best senior golfers from Asia Pacific are today teeing up for the Gold Coast Men’s Senior Amateur Golf Championship.

The competition involves 120 golfers older than 55 from all over Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore vying for the title.

Played over 54 holes, the three-day tournament will be hosted by Lakelands Golf Club, The Glades and Link Hope Island Golf Club.

Along with the overall winner, the tournament is split into four divisions based on age from 55-59-years through to 70-plus.

Gold Coast District Golf Association secretary Barry Neill said the championship had grown since it started as a two-day event about five years ago.

“It’s proving to be an international event, which is fantastic,” he said.

Neill said there were several other golf tournaments happening around the same time to attract the international players.

“We like to give them the chance to play three or four tournaments before they head back home,” he said.

Coolangatta-Tweed golfer Phil Towle has played in the tournament every year and said it’s one of the highlights on the senior calendar.

“I’m very competitive and have played well in the past, so I’m looking forward to it as I love playing in it and competing,” he said.

A passionate golfer, Towle does not miss a chance to get out his clubs.

“As we get older we love our golf and we love the camaraderie of playing with our friends, but it’s also highquality golf,” he said.

The championship, which is a national ranking event for Australian selection, will be played from today until Friday.
