TINY WHITE WHALE SPOTTED OFF BYRON

- SALLY COATES

A LOCAL photographer had a whale of a time when he photographed a white baby whale off Byron Bay.

Nick Atkins, owner of Desert Island Media, spotted the mother initially but got a pleasant surprise when he realised she had a fresh baby calf with her.

“I first saw the whale way out at sea,” he said. “So I put the drone up and lo and behold there’s a baby one there and it’s white.”

Sea World Acting Head of Marine Sciences Marnie Horton said the calf could be as young as days old, but its hue doesn’t mean it’s the spawn of Migaloo.

“Some calves are born more white than others but will quite often darken as they get older,” she said.
