Busted for cosmetics

-

A GOLD Coast man has told a court he stuffed his pockets with $130 worth of cosmetics in a supermarket because he was drunk.

Michael Edwin Lawford pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to unauthorised dealing with shop goods and obstructing police on July 11.

The court heard security guards watched Lawford fill a shopping trolley with items at Coles in Surfers Paradise before “hiding” behind a pillar in the store and putting cosmetics in his pockets.

Police were called and Lawford emptied his pockets, revealing the cosmetics.

When told he was under arrest, Lawford said “f--- off” and walked away.

When he was eventually arrested, Lawford said he didn’t know why he stole the items.

Yesterday Lawford told Magistrate Kerrie O’Callaghan he had “no excuse”.

“I was drunk. It’s out character,” Lawford said.

He was fined $400 and no conviction was recorded. of
