Sick Wright’s title shot up in the air

- AMANDA LULHAM

TYLER Wright’s bid for a third consecutive world crown has taken a dive with the Australian surfer forced out of a second event due to influenza.

Wright will be replaced at the US Open of Surfing world tour event, which is due to start at Huntington Beach, Califor- nia, on Monday, by Central Coast teenager Macy Callaghan who has competed at most events this year as an injury replacement.

Wright, who last year came back from a serious knee injury to win the world title in the final event, will have trouble pulling off a similar feat in 2018 with two “did not competes” on her scorecard. Wright became sick in the lead-up to the J-Bay Open in South Africa earlier this month and was sidelined for the event.

Her brother Owen was forced to withdraw from the men’s event.

The Australian has now confirmed she will also miss the US Open of surfing world tour event due to illness.

“Unfortunately I will be withdrawing from Vans US Open of Surfing. I’m still recovering from Influenza A,” she wrote on social media.

“Mum and Alex have been acting as full-time nurses, they’ve discovered I’m a s*** patient. Thanks to everyone for the continued support.”
