Rescue fits the bill
A PELICAN at Oxenford Weir pelican was rescued from a twisted mass of four hooks and a lure on Saturday.
Wild Bird rescuer Rowley Goonan had been trying for days to capture the injured bird to remove the hooks.
“He was standoff-ish, I didn’t think I’d be able to catch him,” he said.
He said the bird had a lure and two large “jag hooks”, which are a cluster of three hooks.
Four of those hooks had embedded into the pelican’s chest.
The pelican was released after the hooks were removed.
