SUPERSTARS READY TO ROLL AT TWEED
THE Golden Nugget is set to enjoy some extra polish from the Commonwealth Games.
Today’s start of the 32nd edition at the popular Tweed Heads Bowls Club has a bit of buzz from the Games in April.
With some of the world’s best bowlers lining up in the invitational competition – featuring 12 men and 12 women – Tweed Heads bowls manager Wayne Turley is tipping some of the biggest turnouts in years.
“I’m expecting a huge crowd,” he said. “There’s a good buzz around the sport at the moment.”
Barrie Lester, who won two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games, joins Scotland’s Alex Marshall in a power-packed men’s field.
New Zealand’ Jo Edwards leads the women’s charge, with 15 Commonwealth Games medals on show among the 24 bowlers.
They will all be competing for a total of $30,000 in prizemoney, with the final to be held on Thursday.
“It’s not just about the prizemoney, but it’s one of the most prestigious events in Australia,” Turley said.
A live stream of action will be on the Tweed Heads Bowls Club Facebook page.
