Jaywalkers face scrutiny
VIDEO surveillance cameras will be rolled out at busy Brisbane CBD intersections to spy on jaywalkers as part of a major review to improve pedestrian safety.
It comes as new figures reveal police are catching fewer people crossing the road illegally, despite concerns about a recent spate of pedestrian related accidents. The Bulletin can reveal 262 pedestrians were slapped with fines for illegally crossing the road in the city in 2017 – down from 453 the previous year.
In the first three months of 2018, police issued 114 fines – including 67 in March alone.
Brisbane City Council will assess pedestrian behaviour at major intersections and noncrossing zones.
