Cottell strikes gold at last junior event

JESSIE Cottell has taken out the Junior Golden Nugget Girls’ Singles in her last under-18 event before turning 18 next month.

The Helensvale rising star defeated Rebecca Rixon 25-9 in the final at Tweed Heads, a replay of the Australian Open Under-18 Girls’ Singles Final.

“The Nugget is known as a prestigiou­s junior event and I’m very proud and privileged to have participat­ed in this tournament for the past few years, and to win my last junior event is amazing, there are just no words”, Cottell said.

“I was hoping to back up the Under-18 Australian Open title with the Junior Golden Nugget title, I just never knew how incredible it would feel.”

North Toowoomba’s Jake Rynne claimed the Boys’ event after beating Connor Freeman (NSW) 25-21 in the final.

The junior event is a prelude to the prestigiou­s Golden Nugget Singles which started yesterday at Tweed Heads.

Boasting one of the finest fields ever assembled, 24 of the best singles exponents from Australia and overseas will do battle over three sectional days with semi-finals and finals on Thursday.

Helensvale’s Aron Sherriff and Carla Krizanic from Victoria will look to defend their titles in a hot field including Gold Coast Commonweal­th Games singles gold medallists Aaron Wilson and Jo Edwards.

One of the world’s finest, Alex Marshall from Scotland, has made the journey to the event along with current World Singles Champion Shannon McIlroy from New Zealand.

Gold Coasters taking part include stalwart Kelvin Kerkow, Lynsey Clarke, Chloe Stewart, Bolivia Millerick and Kelsey Cottrell. Bowls Australia are live streaming the event on Facebook.

KATELYN Inch has added to her Gold Coast Tweed Champion of Club Champion Women’s Singles title by taking out the correspond­ing pairs event with Julie Keegan.

The Broadbeach pair defeated Jessica Srisamruay­bai and Chloe Stewart on their home green at Tweed Heads and will now advance to the zone play off.

In the men’s Champion of Club Champion Club Singles, Dale McWhinney-Shillingto­n defeated Simon Brown 25-8 and Eric Johannes defeated Alan Law 25-22.

The pair will now face off in the final at Musgrave Hill on August 12 with singles and pairs in the morning and fours in the afternoon.
