LEAGUE OF ADMIRERS TURN OUT FOR BROCK

- EMMA GREENWOOD emma.greenwood@news.com.au

THE football fraternity has flocked to the aid of rising rugby league star Brock Hamill, raising more than $20,000 to help the Gold Coast product in his battle against cancer.

Football figures were thrilled with the response to Saturday’s benefit at Southport Leagues Club, with friends, family, league supporters and members of the community turning out in force.

Former Southport player Hamill linked with Canterbury after graduating from Keebra Park High and while he has returned to the Coast to have treatment for testicular cancer, he has not been forgotten by the club.

Bulldogs head coach Dean Pay, player Marcelo Montoya and officials headed north after Friday night’s clash against the Wests Tigers, with Pay and Gold Coast Titans coach Garth Brennan entertaining the crowd in a question-and-answer session.

Hamill, who is undergoing his fifth round of chemotherapy, was also supported by Keebra mates including Titans five-eighth AJ Brimson and several teachers from the school.

Former Southport official, now Tweed Heads coach, Steve Dowd said Hamill’s popularity lay in his personality as much as his football ability. “He’s a quiet kid and apart from him being a great footballer, he’s a better person,” Dowd said.
