Country calls on Bond talent for NRC

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

BOND University will have a seven-strong representation in the National Rugby Championship after defending premiers Queensland Country announced their 2018 squad.

Bullsharks regulars Angus Blyth, Tai Ford, Joey Fittock and Dan Boardman all made the 36-man list and are joined by Bond-affiliated Queensland Reds players James Slipper and Hamish Stewart.

Country will be coached by Bullsharks assistant Rod Seib, who has previously held the same position at derby rivals Brisbane City.

“We have a lot of returning players … and a particularly exciting group of young players who performed well last year with many going on to represent the Reds in 2018,” Seib said. “I’m looking forward to seeing how they’ve improved with a season of Super Rugby under their belts.

“I’m also pleased to be able to reward and recognise club players who’ve been outstanding throughout the season, with a number of club players coming into the NRC fold for the first time.”

Fittock and Boardman are new additions to the side, while Bond scrumhalf Harry Nucifora was an unlucky omission.

Country’s first game is away against Canberra Vikings on September 1.
