WOMEN TURN BEER-DRINKING ‘TRADITION’ ON HEAD
MORE Gold Coast women are enjoying “blowing the froth” off a schooner as female drinking habits change worldwide.
The Gender Pint Gap report (UK) shows almost a third of women say they chose to drink beer at home, compared to just 3 per cent in 2009.
Cristhian Olaya, general manager of the Oracle-based Bavarian Bier Cafe, said women were turning the “beer-drinking tradition” on its head.
“It’s rare (these days) to not have women come through the bar ordering themselves a schooner,” Mr Olaya said.
“We’re getting more and more girls come through asking for beers … sometimes more than the blokes.”
Mr Olaya attributed the increase to the number of craft beers available.
“There are so many different flavour profiles – fruity beers, punchy steins or strong ales,” he said.
Several of the Oracle’s restaurants will today celebrate International Beer Day.
Bartender-turnedmarketing graduate Alisha Kelly said, while she was indifferent when it came to beer, plenty of her friends opted for the amber liquid over spirits.
“At least four friends from a group of around 10 would order beer,” she said.
“Two years ago when we would go out, nobody would order beer. Exposure to culture and Oktoberfest has changed the way we drink.”
