Driver dies in blaze

POLICE are still working to identify the person killed in a car crash on the northern Gold Coast early yesterday.

They have not made public the gender or the age of the person killed in the crash.

Around 2.15am, the vehcile crashed and burst into flames on Castle Hill Dr at Gaven It is understood the 4WD left the road and smashed into a tree.

The driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene. Firefighte­rs extinguish­ed the blaze within minutes.

According to a witness, who did not want to be named, there were several explosions as the car crashed. A police spokespers­on said a witness tried to pull the driver out but was forced to abandon the rescue because of the fire.

Corrin Pascoe, who lives nearby, said the crash happened about 50m from her driveway on a straight stretch of road.

“The car on the back of the tow truck was a horrific mess,” she said.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigat­ing and has spoken to a number of people. The driver’s identity is likely to be released today. Police are urging anyone with dashcam footage or other informatio­n to come forward.
