SWELL NEWS, THE WAVES ARE ON THEIR WAY FINALLY
THINGS are looking up for Currumbin’s Dasha Solomkina and thousands of other boardriders on the Gold Coast.
After two weeks of barely surfable waves on the Gold Coast there are signs of surfable waves are on the horizon.
Coastalwatch chief forecaster Ben Macartney said a slight increase in easterly swell was expected towards the end of the week thanks to a low-pressure system in the South Pacific.
“Initially, this points to very small lines of easterly swell starting to show up late next week, probably not exceeding a slow 1 to 2ft along open breaks,” Mr Macartney said.
“(There’s) scope for a slightly stronger pulse in the 2 to 3ft plus range into Friday and the weekend.
“This will invariably become clearer in light of the system’s development.”
The swell is set to be met with mostly clear skies.
Besides possible fog and showers today the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts sunny conditions until Thursday.
Slightly below average low temperatures between 7 to 10C expected and average maximum temperatures of 22C are forecast.
Ms Solominka was one of dozens of boardriders making the most of the small swell at Currumbin Alley yesterday.
The Russian-born occupational therapist said she had returned to surfing after rupturing ligaments in her knee three years ago – while learning to surf in Sydney.
“Growing up in Russia ... being able to go surfing seemed like a dream,” the 29-year-old said yesterday.
“It took me a long time to get back psychologically but I had to get back out there.
“It’s been about six months since I’ve been back.”
