Tough talk at Seagulls does trick

-

A FRANK chat in the Piggabeen Sports Complex sheds could be the catalyst for Runaway Bay’s Rugby League Gold Coast premiership dream.

The Seagulls were thumped 58-6 by Tweed Heads last weekend – having been rocked by the late withdrawal of prop Javarn Nofoagatotoa – but immediately bounced back to defeat in-form Burleigh 34-10 at Bycroft Oval on Saturday night.

The Bears had held a fivematch winning streak before falling to Bay for the third time this season.

Bay fullback Jack Mackin revealed the playing group had an open conversation straight after the Tweed game to try to get their season back on track.

“We stayed in the sheds for an extra 20 minutes, just having a good chat about our efforts and making sure that everyone gets to training and stuff like that, just getting our heads on right,” the 22-yearold said.

A Bay junior, Mackin said they had played the waiting game to overcome Burleigh.

“We knew they had a lot of younger players so we just thought if we stick at it, they will crack before us so we just kept hoping that would happen and it did,” he said.

Elsewhere, Tugun kept their finals hopes alive with a 32-18 upset over Tweed Heads as veteran Nathanael Barnes scored two tries against his former club. Currumbin defeated Ormeau 42-16 while a Beau Cordtz hat-trick helped Southport pip Bilambil 30-24.
