BEER GARDEN RENOVATION A NEW TWIST IN STORIED HISTORY

- ANDREW POTTS

ONE of the Surfers Paradise party precinct’s oldest venues is about to undergo a bigbudget makeover.

The Surfers Paradise Beer Garden will get its own deck overlooking Cavill Ave Mall as part of the facelift.

If approved by the Gold Coast City Council, the deck would be built over the stair- ways and the existing glass roof would be removed to open up the area.

Timber panelling would be placed around the deck to create a modern look.

New LED signage would also be placed on the exterior and fixed umbrellas and sliding doors installed on the existing outdoor deck overlooking Cavill and Orchid avenues.

A development application report filed with the council says the new-look premises would “enhance” the area.

“The proposal will not result in any significant adverse impacts on the environment or surrounding uses but rather will enhance the overall aesthetic of the premises and will positively contribute to the recreation and entertainment appeal of the Surfers Paradise locality,” the report says.

The beer garden can trace its origins back to Jim Cavill’s famous Surfers Paradise Hotel, built in 1925.

Glen Day, president of the Restaurant Industry Support Gold Coast Association, said the facelift would help keep the area competitive.

“I think it will go quite well in Cavill Ave,” he said. “I used to go to the beer garden as a young bloke when it was just grass and it was fantastic.

“A revamp like this is a good idea. It is really competitive out there and you need to offer something a bit different. There is too much of everything for the people who are not just here in peak seasons, so anything like this is good.”
