THE WAR ON PLASTIC STRAWS

- ANNABEL FULLER

USED for minutes but here for centuries — here is your Gold Coast guide to managing the war on waste.

Sipping up smoothies, juices and iced lattes through disposable plastic straws is soon to become a habit of the past.

But for Gold Coasters who enjoy their Slurpee sessions, you can still enjoy your drink and join the plastic pollution revolution.

Gold Coast cafes are abandoning the humble straw to seek a more environmentally sustainable alternative.

Favourite eateries Cardamom Pod and Bam Bam Bakehouse are planning to switch to paper biodegradable straws, following in the footsteps of Tugun’s House of Herbert, which has adopted their environmental stewardship journey.

For those who want to go further and eliminate waste from straws, Burleigh’s Helen’s Heavenly Bulk Foods is one of many retailers around the Coast selling a range of reusable straws.

The eco-friendly straws come in bamboo, stainless steel, silicon and glass varieties, starting at $3.99.

The changes to plastic waste follow the recent state ban on plastic bags which hopes to see a reduction in plastics ending up as litter in our ecosystem.
