WOMAN AT CENTRE OF ALLEGED STABBING

- LEA EMERY

CARLY Smith sat with her head held high in the Southport Magistrates Court for two days straight.

Her cool demeanour only shattered once when she burst into tears during her husband Steven Edward Smith’s hour-long bail application.

Mr Smith is accused of stabbing millionaire businessman Paul Picone in a Mudgeeraba sports field car park about 3pm on August 1.

Mr Picone spent about four days in intensive care.

It is alleged messages which suggested a “personal relationship” were sent between Mrs Smith and Mr Picone. Mr Smith is accused of using his wife’s phone to arrange the meeting with Mr Picone.

Defence lawyer Campbell MacCallum told the court Smith and his wife denied that Mrs Smith had a personal relationship with Mr Picone.

During the court appearance, Mr Smith looked at his wife, who sat in the public gallery with two of their three children and his parents.

They have been married for seven years and together for 17 years. They run a cleaning business, CS Cleaning Qld Pty Ltd, which employs more than 50 staff. It was through that business that Mrs Smith and Mr Picone met.

Mrs Smith waited patiently for her husband to be released from the Southport Watchhouse yesterday after his bail was finalised. He spent an additional night behind bars because of an administrative error. He was also ordered to report seven days a week to Nerang Police Station which only opens five days at week.
