THIS ON-TREND OFFERING IS SO HOT IT’S SMOKING

- AMBER MACPHERSON

IF you’re going to be spending your house deposit on avo on toast, you might as well make it this one.

The signature dish from a new Reedy Creek eatery, the Allotment Cafe, has been raising eyebrows and tempting tastebuds.

The dish is an avocado mousse, citrus salad and poached egg in a mason jar. It is then pumped with smoke before the jar lid is sealed tight.

Allotment chef and owner Simon Capewell says that is when the magic happens.

“When the customer pops the lid, they get all the smoke in front of them,” he said. “It lingers in the glass jar, too, especially on a cold day. It looks like a witch’s cauldron.”

Mr Capewell said he preferred to keep the dish a secret for new customers, relishing in their delight when all the elements are revealed.

“We try to keep it a bit quiet. As soon as one goes out, everyone wants one.

“We had a couple of tradies come in and ask ‘have you got avo on toast?’

“When we sent it out, watching them try to figure it out was hilarious.”

Mr Capewell said the dish, which costs $14 or $16 with salmon, was so popular it was likely to become a permanent menu fixture.

He said he was planning to offer a “theatrical” hot chocolate in coming weeks and was securing his own beehives to use their honey in dishes.
