DREAMS INTO REALITY

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

WHEN Kate Stanley became a librarian, she could never have imagined less than a decade later she would be helping students code robotics and access augmented reality.

That is exactly what the Benowa State High School library teacher now finds herself doing, as she partners with Southport Library to bring tech workshops into the school.

Augmented reality brings parts of the digital world into our perception of the real world — students were able to point their phone camera at an image and bring it to life on screen.

This was the third of multiple workshops currently being held at Benowa State High, which Ms Stanley said are capturing the imagination of students.

“The first time we had these little robots that the kids coded, made their own codes and the robot went hither and thither around the courtyard,” she said.

“Then the next time we had another activity where the kids were coding using things like marshmallows or even zucchinis and bananas as the receptors for the electrical base.

“So they could press the marshmallow or press the zucchini and that would play a little video game.

“It’s amazing what you can do with science now.”
