- with Brett Wilkie

PARADISE Point’s Eric Johannes has taken out the Gold Coast Tweed Champion of Club Champion singles after defeating Dale McWhinneyShillington in the final.

Johannes jumped out of the blocks but McWhinneyShillington continued to fight, winning the next couple ends to trail 12-6.

McWhinney-Shillington then picked up a full count of four to close the gap to 18-14. Johannes then hit his straps again and closed out the game to win 25-14.

Johannes is a former South African representative who won a bronze medal in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games men’s triples.

A semi-finalist in this year’s Australian Open singles and quarter-finalist in the pairs, he also won the 2017 Queensland Champion of Club Champion fours title.

After a stint in NSW since moving to Australia, Johannes is now the bowls co-ordinator at the Paradise Point club.

Aron Sherriff has made his presence felt in his first year of Champion of Club Champions on the Gold Coast, taking out the remaining two titles with his Helensvale teammates.

Sherriff and I teamed up to defeat Broadbeach’s Chris Lanham and Ryan Burnett 19-9 in the pairs final.

Sherriff then joined Mathew Lucas, Sam White and Mark Casey to win the fours 24-13 over South Tweed’s John Bain, Scott DeJong, Nigel Smith and Neville Jenkins.

These three winners along with mixed pairs champions advance to the zone playoff against the Gateway district champions on Sunday at Capalaba. Winners will progress to the state finals at Club Helensvale from October 20-25. In other events:
