FIRST LOOK INSIDE NEW GALLERY

THE $60 million art gallery at Bundall will feature a rooftop restaurant with 270degree views of the Surfers Paradise skyline and Hinterland, artist workshop, main hall and children’s space.

The first details of the sixstorey building, which will be part of the Gold Coast cultural precinct’s Home of the Arts (HOTA), are contained in the development application filed by the Gold Coast City Council.

The gallery will have a floorspace of 6500sq m across five levels and be Australia’s biggest regional art gallery.

Mayor Tom Tate said the gallery’s interior reinforced “that quintessential spirit of the Gold Coast”.

“We do things differently and apologise to no one for who we are,” he said. “There is no doubt that this gallery will take its place in Australia’s art and cultural landscape as a must-see destination.’’

The gallery is expected to operate 7am-6pm seven days a week. The rooftop restaurant is expected to be open as late as midnight when hosting functions.

The tower will be built on the southern side of the HOTA amphitheatre and will replace a car park.

Those lost parks will be replaced by 123 new spaces at parts of the Evandale parklands on the site’s southern side opposite the council chambers.

The development application is the latest step towards realising the $80 million second stage of the cultural precinct.
