OFF THE RECORD

-

THIS could get verrry interesting. In one of our more fashionable streets the arrival of a new resident has shaken and stirred some of the neighbours. The reason is that some years back the newbie was responsible for the loss of a substantial pile of invested moolah which affected a lot of people. As luck would have it, residing in the same street is a chap who lost more than most and who still holds a deep and abiding hatred for the corporate cowboy who cost him a fair chunk of his pile. As of writing they hadn’t yet met in the street but as they both own and walk their dogs could there be an all-in between mongrels and masters anytime soon?

WORK experience is one of those ideas where students get some real life knowledge in a living, breathing work place. It can occasionally be a boon for the employer who gets to see which of those eager beaver young ‘uns has what it takes to be a possible employee in the future. There is extra work for the boss who has to spend valuable time corralling the kids and explaining patiently what’s what. One of those managers was therefore quite miffed to learn that while he was happy to help the students, the place of learning has been charging them. Not just a few dollars more but a fistful of dollars running into many thousands. The end of a beautiful friendship.

SPEAKING of students, one of our better credentialed bizzoids was invited to give a lecture to those studying in his area of expertise. After about 10 minutes he noticed that most of them were staring down at their lap with a soft glow shining on to their faces. Yes folks, the dreaded phone addiction had struck and the wannabe masters of the universe had decided that their social media status was far more interesting. Knowing he was fighting a losing battle he cut short his lecture and informed the powers that be not to ask him back as the students obviously know far more than he does.

CONFIDENCE is key and this sweet young thing was hired because she possessed the pose and assurance that was needed for the job. Three months in, she asked to see her new boss and asked when she would be getting a promotion. Somewhat taken aback, he explained somewhat bluntly the real-life timelines of her career. First, master the basics and become super proficient then after two years you may be selected to move up the food chain. The truth hurts.
