Even fans not aware of fixture

- RYAN KEEN

GOLD Coast leading criminal lawyer and self-confessed rugby diehard Campbell MacCallum is stunned he was unaware of the Wallabies versus Argentina on the Gold Coast next month.

Asked yesterday if going, the former Queensland age group player said: “As a rugby union tragic I was surprised a Wallaby game was going to be played at such a fantastic stadium and I didn’t know about it.”

The high-profile, snappily dressed lawyer who knows a thing or two about self-promotion, added: “I don’t reside under rocks. I know exactly when every NRL game is on at Cbus but a Wallaby Test escaped my attention.”

Gold Coaster and rugbymad father Jeremy Austin echoed the call for more hype.

Mr Austin, whose teenage son Jake plays for Surfers Paradise club Dolphins, said he was aware of the Test because they always mapped out the season and which games to attend.

Promotion about the fixture had recently been done amongst junior club members, he said.

“But from a Gold Coast perspective, if you weren’t in rugby circles, you probably wouldn’t know about it – there has been nothing out there.

“It’s great for Gold Coast rugby to have a Test match but the powers that be at Rugby Australia primarily seem focused on the Bledisloe matches and not this one.

“It’s something that needs to be promoted a bit more heavily. I’d love to see a packed stadium.”
