BURLEIGH LIGHT RAIL SPLITS VIEWS

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND

THERE were mixed views among hundreds of people who turned up to a light rail community consultation meeting at Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park Surf Life Saving Club last night.

Two people stood outside dishing out anti-light-rail pamphlets, while inside, residents viewed posters detailing stage 3A of the tram system, which will run from Broadbeach to Burleigh.

Burleigh resident Denise Holt told the Bulletin she feared running trams through the suburb would ruin its village feel.

“There will be less parking because everyone will be parking here because of the tram,” she said “I’m really against it.” Barbara Hill, of Burleigh Waters, also said parking was a concern, especially for those who didn’t live close to the line.

“Along the Esplanade, it’s already packed,” she said.

“On Goodwin Terrace it’s two-hour parking ... the light rail is not really for the locals.”

Cr Pauline Young said most feedback at the session had been positive with locals happy Conner St would remain untouched. She said some people raised concerns about higher buildings potentially being allowed.

“But the city plan will guide all that,” she said.

She said the area’s iconic Norfolk Pines would also be retained.
