Sporting stars join bike ride for charity

TOUR de France green jersey winner Robbie McEwen and rugby league/rugby union dual internatio­nal Mat Rogers have launched the first Condev Cares Life Cycle event at the North Burleigh Surf Club.

The Life Cycle on September 2-7, will feature 20 cyclists pedalling from Newcastle to Robina – 1000km – to raise more than $50,000 in support of the Currumbin Community Special School.

Rogers will ride the entire 1000km while McEwen will join the riders on the last leg from Byron Bay to Robina on September 7.

The school captain from the delivered an inspiring welcome address and one student gave a moving classical musical performanc­e.

The students of the school also created 18 artworks themed around the cycle event and these were auctioned in a live and silent auction on Friday raising more than $8000 with one piece going for $2400.

The Life Cycle aims to fund the purchase of two DUET Electro tandem bicycles, worth $12,100 each, two Rifton Dynamic Pacers, $5332 each, and six HHS7 Handy Upright Handcycles, $1500 each, worth a total of $43,864.
